Firm at Belgium’s middle-longdistance top: Luc van Mechelen, Oud-Turnhout (B)

For ages the region Turnhout (Belgium) is widely known for it’s topclass fanciers. In recent years a new generation is knocking on the door and amongst them Luc van Mechelen from Oud-Turnhout is a prominent one.

  • He is the owner of the 2nd National Ace Little middle long distance young birds and also became 3rd National Champion Little Middle long distance.
  • Then there’s the 3rd Olympic bird 300-600 km in Poznan and the 4th national acebird young middle long distance and 2nd provincial championship HAFO 2010.
  • This year a new diamondseries was achieved, no less than 21 first prizes were won, amongst them the first Provincial on Bourges!

Janssen brothers, Heremans-Ceusters and Hasendonckx

He’s a pigeonfancier from his eighteenth year on and is being helped by his brother Guy. They are also both poultrybreeders, owning two poultry farms with some 100.000 chickens!
The whole pigeonthing started with birds from their patron Albert van Miert, the man which also introduced Luc in Arendonk at the legendary Janssen brothers where he bought his presentday foundingcock in 1999. From 2003 and onwards also pigeons of Heremans-Ceusters came to his lofts to further strengthen it. Recently also birds from Maurits Hasendonckx became a major impulse.

It’s the hens that win!

His flying team consists of 30 hens, 35 widowhood cocks and there are 30 breedingpairs.  They deliver some 200 youngsters for Luc’s own use. He has specialized on the middle long distance, allthough occassionaly he also baskets for the long distance races. It’s the hens that win most of his high scores, which are played on the widowhoodsystem. The coupling is at the end of november and the first eggs are being hatched by feedingpairs.  The second round is bred by the hens themselves before they move to their racingloft. By the end of march the flyingseason starts and lasts until early august. At first the birds are raced ‘loose’, when half april is reached they are mated for some four days. Long enough to attach to their cock properly and short enough to prevent them from laying eggs. The first weekend of may is when the hens have a middle-longdistance race every week.
Luc tries not to spend to much time with his birds, considering the fact that he has his own farm, so in the loft a conveyerbelt is installed to remove the droppings out of the nextboxes. Once a day the in the morning at eight o’clock the hens are outside for their dailly excersize and are forced to fly an hour. The better the training, the better they eat and vice versa.
During the week the hens are housed in a lot with only perches. A movable floor assures that they can’t pair with other hens. Twice a day their foods and drinks are served in the hallway, which consists of a full hopper during twenty minutes to half an hour. They can eat as much as they wish, in the first couple of days this is a light mixture, which becomes heavier later on. This first two days Naturaline is added to their drinking water, and once a weak brewers-yeast is mixed with their feed. When they come home they find dextrose in their water.

Medical

Every week there’s a vet on their farm, but he is only there fort heir chickens. There’s only medication for their pigeons when they it’s nescessary. Once a year or so the vet takes a look at the pigeons, mostly to vaccinate (PMV, Salmonella, Pox).
