‘I shall give you the birds that will give you a head start’ - Kas and Karel Meijers, Ootmarsum

They still lack their own website, but naming Karel and Kas Meijers in the Netherlands does ring a bell for most fanciers. Almost instantly people will answer that they are the most complete and successful branch of the Leo Heremans-tree of Vorselaar.

What’s their successtory? ‘’After we quit active racing in 2000, we decided to participate in the Dutch Open off 2006. In order to successfully compete, we wanted to obtain a bird of the best offspring. After an internet search I saw a coupon of the top performing loft of the Belgian tandem Heremans-Ceusters. The coupon was bought and we made the first arrangements. Later on the word was spread that this edition of the Dutch Open was being cancelled because of bird flu. Just before that we had decided to start racing again and build our own strain with solely Heremans-Ceusterspigeons. It was the spring of 2006 when we first visited the lofts in Vorselaar. We were deeply impressed by their birds and not only left with a beautiful youngster but also with two pairs of eggs from the breeders. I had to hatch these at some friends for I didn’t have any pigeons yet. The same evening I phoned Leo and ordered some more youngsters.”

Friendship

They paid many more visits to Vorselaar since then and Leo became a good friend of the Meijers’. He became Kas his mentor for he had discovered some talent in the bloke. “I shall give you the birds that will give you a head start’’, were Leo’s words Kas will always remember. Kas: “In the winter of 2006-2007 I went to Belgium by train and Leo picked me up at Herenthals-station, also a day to remember. The breeders were paired to produce a complete round for Hans Eijerkamp and Sons. Leo offered me to choose the couples of which I wished to have youngsters from the second round. That was before the total auction of march 2007.”
Several years have passed since then and also father Karel was again infected by the pigeon microbe. The formed their partnership after moving to the new address. Their first season together was 2010 with only yearlings, but nevertheless promising. Their zenith was the double victory on provincial Strombeek in Afdeling 9/Oost-Nederland against no less than 32.000 birds. Later on their NL09-1797880 became best bird WHZB on the fall-races, another highlight!
